DHRC Student-Initiated Summer Internship Fellowship (U-M)

The Donia Human Rights Center is initiating a pilot program to offer a rising LSA undergraduate junior or senior a fellowship to work with (or at) an international human rights institution or organization identified by the student. The fellowship seeks to support a student with a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in human rights.

The successful applicant is expected to spend eight weeks, between May and August 2021, working virtually (or, if possible, in person) with an international human rights institution or organization. To qualify for the fellowship, the placement must be with a government, a non-governmental organization (NGO), an international organization, or a research institution that works on issues of international human rights.  The placement can be located within the United States or abroad. The following are not eligible placements: (a) an organization that works primarily on issues of domestic law or policy without some focus on international human rights; (b) any program for academic credit; (c) research for a faculty member at a university.

Students must provide a letter of invitation from the proposed host organization that will set out in detail the work that the student will perform. 

The fellowship provides a stipend of up to $5,000 to defray the costs of living for eight weeks. Applications will be reviewed by a committee from DHRC. If COVID-19 restrictions and conditions permit travel to the relevant placement, the fellowship will provide an additional $1,000 to reimburse travel expenses.

Upon completion of this virtual internship, fellows are expected to deliver a presentation of their internship projects and experiences and submit a written reflection to DHRC.

Eligibility Requirements

This fellowship is open to LSA undergraduates in the class of 2022 or 2023. Students can apply from any department in LSA. It is not open to graduating seniors (i.e., students graduating in WN21 or SP/SU21). Students must return to campus for at least one semester after completing this internship.

Application Procedure

Applicants must submit the following:

1. A proposal: The 2-3 page single-spaced proposal should include a complete description of the student's proposed internship. The proposal should include a detailed description of the organization and the nature of the work the student will be performing; the dates of the proposed internship; any relevant experience; relevant language skills; proposed itemized budget; and other relevant information. It should be sufficiently detailed to permit the selection committee to evaluate the quality and feasibility of the proposed project or program. Students do not need to have a track record of experience to be considered.  

Please note: If you are planning an in-person internship experience, please submit two itemized budgets: one for an in-person experience and one for a virtual experience. If the in-person internship is not possible, the fellowship will provide funding for your virtual experience. As noted, the maximum amount awarded will be $5000. 

2. Letter of invitation from the proposed placement. The student must submit a letter from the organization, and ideally from the student’s proposed supervisor, regarding the substantive work or projects. Students will not be funded to perform administrative or clerical work for the organization.

3. Resume or CV

4. Unofficial or official U-M transcript

5. At least one letter from a U-M Instructor

6. Identify other funding sources. Applicants must identify all other funding sources they have applied to and received funding from. If this does not apply to the applicant, the applicant must explicitly state that they have not applied for other funding. During the application review process and leading up to the experience, fellowship recipients who receive additional funding towards their internship or research must inform our office immediately.

CFA: Archival Fellowship 2021 at the HAEU (Florence, Italy)

The Interdisciplinary Research Cluster on Environmental Challenges and Climate Change Governance launched a call for applications for a Visiting Research Fellow on environment/climate change governance at the Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU) to stimulate interest and generate fresh findings on these matters.

All current non-EUI postgraduate researchers are eligible to apply for the Visiting Research Fellowship. The Research Fellow’s home discipline can be history, law, sociology, political and social sciences or economics. Interdisciplinary approaches are strongly encouraged. 

The Fellow will be in residence at the EUI for a period of two to three months (longer if self-financing for additional time is available) during the year 2021. The maximum amount of funding the successful candidate may receive is EUR 5000.

The Visiting Research Fellow will be required to share their research findings with the EUI community in the form of a presentation in the seminar series of the research cluster on Environmental Challenges and Climate Change Governance. Publication of a Working Paper in the cluster’s working paper series is strongly encouraged. The Visiting Research Fellow will furthermore be expected to assist the EUI community in learning about the methodologies and values applicable to research on environment and climate change governance at the HAEU. To this end, the Fellow shall prepare brief training materials (3–5 pages) outlining how to approach the challenges of conducting research in this area.

Applications for the Research Fellowship will be accepted until 26 February 2021, at 12.00 pm Florence time, and should be addressed to Serena.Belligoli@eui.eu. The applications will be evaluated by the coordinators of the cluster on the basis of the originality and the relevance of the proposals to the cluster’s themes, as well as to the material available at the HAEU. Applicants will be notified by mid- March.

The Interdisciplinary Research Cluster on Environmental Challenges and Climate Change Governance is jointly coordinated by EUI Professors Joanne Scott (Department of Law) and Corinna Unger (Department of History and Civilization). It serves as a platform to bring together researchers and scholars from all disciplines represented at the EUI working on environmental and climate issues. It also promotes the development of joint research initiatives and the establishment of networks beyond the EUI. The cluster’s activities entail a seminar series, the organization of an interdisciplinary workshop, and the award of a fellowship to conduct research at the Historical Archives of the European Union, which are housed at the EUI.

The Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU) preserves and makes available the historical documents of the European Union institutions as well as the archives of private associations/organizations and individuals. These archives offer rich, and largely unexploited, opportunities to conduct research into the dynamics and drivers of European Union environmental law, policy and governance. The Archives’ holdings cover both internal and external dimensions of the EU, including the process of enlargement and the EEC’s/EC’s/EU’s relationships with other parts of the world, especially the former European colonies.

CFA: Henry Chauncey Jr. Postdoctoral Fellowships

Description
The Chauncey Postdoctoral Fellowships are two positions funded by the Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy for one-year and are renewable for one additional year. We seek to attract outstanding junior scholars from around the globe whose work addresses questions related to the history of global affairs, statecraft, and grand strategy, broadly defined. Postdoctoral fellows must have completed their PhD degree to begin the fellowship. They are expected to use their time at Yale to conduct original research and prepare manuscripts for publication. Fellows are expected to participate in the academic life and public activities of the Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy. Postdoctoral fellows are required to remain in residence through the duration of their fellowship. Offices are located on Yale’s campus.

Salary: $55,000 plus $5,000 for research expenses.

Qualifications
Recent Ph.D. in relevant field. Ph.D. must be in hand by September 1, 2020.

CFA: Postdoctoral Fellowship in History and Cornerstone

The Department of History at Purdue University, West Lafayette campus, invites applications for a one-year renewable Postdoctoral Fellowship in History (August 17, 2020 - May 16, 2021).  We seek a historian of exceptional promise who will contribute to the excellence of our department and the College’s Cornerstone Integrated Liberal Arts program.  Candidates working in any area of history are encouraged to apply.
The successful applicant will contribute intellectually to the department and the College by collaborating with faculty to conduct research, while teaching four courses during the 2020-2021 Academic Year including three in Cornerstone (SCLA 101 or 102) and one in the Department of History. They will also work closely with a faculty mentor on an appropriate plan of research and professional development. The current postdoctoral award is a one academic year 9-month residential fellowship, renewable for a second year.  The award includes a salary of $50,000, full Purdue University employee benefits, a research/travel fund of $2,000, and a $2,000 moving allowance. To be eligible for consideration, applicants must have received their Ph.D. between September 1, 2016 and May 31, 2020.

CFA: 2019-20 Mellon-CES Dissertation Completion Fellowships in European Studies

The Council for European Studies (CES) invites eligible graduate students in the humanities to apply for the 2020-21 Mellon-CES Dissertation Completion Fellowships in European Studies. Each fellowship includes a $27,500 stipend, paid in six (6) bi-monthly installments over the course of the fellowship year, as well as assistance in securing reimbursements or waivers in eligible health insurance and candidacy fees.  

Winners of the Mellon-CES Dissertation Completion Fellowships will also be expected to participate in a number of activities organized by the Council for European Studies, which are designed to support early career development. These activities include: presenting at the International Conference of Europeanists, hosted by the Council for European Studies; publishing in and producing a feature for CES’ online journal; and participating in several digital and in-person career development seminars and/or workshops.

Eligibility:

Mellon-CES Dissertation Completion Fellowships are intended to facilitate the timely completion of the doctoral degree by late-stage graduate students in the humanities. Applicants must:

• be ABD (year 5 and above) at the start of the fellowship year;
• be a US citizen or green card holder;
• have no more than one full year of dissertation work remaining at the start of the fellowship year as certified by his or her dissertation advisor;
• be enrolled at a higher education institution in the US that is a member of the Council for European Studies Academic Consortium. Students whose universities are not currently members of the CES consortium may apply, but they are encouraged to apply early in the application season so that every effort may be made to enroll the institution in the CES member consortium and, thus, establish the student's eligibility by the application deadline.

The applicant must also have exhausted the dissertation completion funding normally provided by his or her academic department or university for the coming academic year (applicants who still have a potential to receive funding from their institution for the fellowship year are not eligible to apply). He or she must be working on a topic within or substantially overlapping European Studies.

The American Academy in Berlin invites applications for its residential fellowships for the academic year 2020/21.

The Academy seeks to enrich transatlantic dialogue in the arts, humanities, and public policy through the development and communication of projects of the highest scholarly merit. Past recipients include anthropologists, art historians, literary scholars, philosophers, historians, musicologists, journalists, writers of fiction and nonfiction, filmmakers, sociologists, legal scholars, economists, and public policy experts.

Approximately twenty Berlin Prizes are conferred annually. Fellowships are typically awarded for an academic semester, but shorter stays of six to eight weeks are also possible. Benefits include round-trip airfare, partial board, a $5,000 monthly stipend, and accommodations at the Academy’s lakeside Hans Arnhold Center, in the Wannsee district of Berlin.

For 2020/21, the Academy will also award three specially designated fellowships: two Andrew W. Mellon Fellowships in the Humanities, for work that demonstrates an interest in the topics of migration and social integration, race in comparative perspective, or exile and return. In addition, in memory of its founder, the Academy will name a Richard C. Holbrooke Fellow for a project that looks at diplomatic approaches to resolving major global issues, from armed conflicts to environmental challenges to the impact of new technologies.

For all projects, the Academy asks that candidates explain the relevance of a stay in Berlin to the development of their work. Proposals are by no means required to focus on German topics, but the Academy is interested in projects that will resonate with Berlin audiences.

Fellowships are restricted to US citizens and permanent residents. Candidates in academic disciplines must have completed a PhD at the time of application. Candidates working in other fields—journalism, film, law, or public policy—must have equivalent professional experience. Writers should have published at least one book with an established press at the time of application.

Please note that Berlin Prizes for visual artists, composers, and poets are determined in invitation-only competitions.

Following a peer-reviewed evaluation process, an independent Selection Committee reviews finalist applications. The 2020/21 Berlin Prizes will be announced in late April 2020.
