Call for Nominations: Laura Shannon Prize in Contemporary European Studies

Deadline: January 31, 2020


The Laura Shannon Prize in Contemporary European Studies is now accepting nominations for history and social sciences books published in 2018 or 2019.

The Laura Shannon Prize, which carries a $10,000 award, is administered by the Nanovic Institute for European Studies at the University of Notre Dame, and it is awarded annually to the author of the best book in European studies that transcends a focus on any one country, state, or people to stimulate new ways of thinking about contemporary Europe as a whole.  (“Contemporary” is construed broadly, and books about particular countries or regions have done well in the process so long as there are implications for the remainder of Europe.)

Nominations are submitted by a simple electronic form and may be made by authors or publishers. Each submission requires only two copies of each nominated work. The deadline for submissions is January 31, 2020.  Copies of the book do not need to arrive by the deadline so long as the electronic form is completed.  Additional details about the prize and the entry form are available on the Nanovic Institute's website.

CFA: 2019-20 Mellon-CES Dissertation Completion Fellowships in European Studies

Deadline: January 15, 2020

The Council for European Studies (CES) invites eligible graduate students in the humanities to apply for the 2020-21 Mellon-CES Dissertation Completion Fellowships in European Studies. Each fellowship includes a $27,500 stipend, paid in six (6) bi-monthly installments over the course of the fellowship year, as well as assistance in securing reimbursements or waivers in eligible health insurance and candidacy fees.  

Winners of the Mellon-CES Dissertation Completion Fellowships will also be expected to participate in a number of activities organized by the Council for European Studies, which are designed to support early career development. These activities include: presenting at the International Conference of Europeanists, hosted by the Council for European Studies; publishing in and producing a feature for CES’ online journal; and participating in several digital and in-person career development seminars and/or workshops.

Eligibility:

Mellon-CES Dissertation Completion Fellowships are intended to facilitate the timely completion of the doctoral degree by late-stage graduate students in the humanities. Applicants must:

• be ABD (year 5 and above) at the start of the fellowship year;
• be a US citizen or green card holder;
• have no more than one full year of dissertation work remaining at the start of the fellowship year as certified by his or her dissertation advisor;
• be enrolled at a higher education institution in the US that is a member of the Council for European Studies Academic Consortium. Students whose universities are not currently members of the CES consortium may apply, but they are encouraged to apply early in the application season so that every effort may be made to enroll the institution in the CES member consortium and, thus, establish the student's eligibility by the application deadline.

The applicant must also have exhausted the dissertation completion funding normally provided by his or her academic department or university for the coming academic year (applicants who still have a potential to receive funding from their institution for the fellowship year are not eligible to apply). He or she must be working on a topic within or substantially overlapping European Studies. 

Deadlines:

The annual application period opens October 1, 2019. Applications are due (along with all supporting materials) on or before January 15, 2020.

Applications need to be submitted with all the requested supporting documents before the closing date. All applicants, including students who do not apply for a scholarship, must indicate their selection committee (in principle according to their nationality) in the application form. Should there be no selection committee, please select 'No selection committee - College of Europe'. This does not apply to MATA applicants (Master in Transatlantic Affairs).

Recommendation letters are in the form of online recommendation questionnaires that are automatically sent to your nominated referees via email through your online application.

The Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies (WCED) at the University of Michigan invites postdoctoral scholars to apply for the Emerging Democracies Postdoctoral Fellowship. The two-year fellowship supports research on the broad historical, political, economic, and societal conditions under which democracies emerge—and autocracies endure. 

Eligibility:
We welcome excellent applicants from all disciplines. Eligibility is restricted to those who have received their PhD after January 1, 2016.
