Representations of the Danube

in Literature and the Arts

The Annual Conference of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures, University of Bucharest, Romania, 25-26 November 2022

From the Black Forest to the Black Sea, the Danube crosses ten countries and four capital cities, forming a site of cultural memory, both fluid because of the natural features of the river and static because of the lands it connects. From epoch to epoch, the Danube has sparked the imagination of many writers and artists that left us a rich artistic heritage, whose disparate locations invite us to travel and explore.

The river Danube is an essential element in defining and shaping the geographical, environmental, historical and political landscape of Central and Eastern Europe. Therefore, the study of the cultural phenomena of the Danube region is meant to increase our awareness of belonging to a diverse common tradition and to get inspiration from the natural relationships the river represents.

Participants are invited to present papers that explore the artistic cultures of the Danube in verbal, visual and aural forms – such as prose, poetry, drama, graphic novels, comics, documentaries, feature films, photography, painting, sculpture, installation art, music etc. – examining the signifying systems they use, the imagery on which they draw, their audiences, their social and historical contexts, and the further discourses they bring about.

Authors who would like to participate online or onsite are invited to send a 250-word abstract, 5 keywords, a short bibliography and a 100-word bio to the panel organizer, Monica Manolachi, monica.manolachi@lls.unibuc.ro, by 1 November 2022.

Participation fee: 100 RON (teaching staff) / 50 RON (students). Details about the payment will be provided at a later date to those who send their contributions.

A selection of articles based on the presentations will be published in a themed volume.

Winter 2021 Virtual ELI Conversation Circles

Are you an international student at the University of Michigan? Are you interested in practicing informal English conversation, learning about US culture, meeting new people, and connecting with other international students and scholars at U-M before you arrive on campus? 

If yes, register to join a Conversation Circle!

Conversation Circles are free, weekly, one-hour meetings facilitated by volunteer U-M students, faculty, or staff who are native or near-native English speakers.

Virtual Conversation Circles are designed to create connections among international students and scholars at U-M. During this unprecedented time of self-isolation you get a chance to meet new people and feel connected with the U-M community. In Conversation Circles you will practice speaking English through informal conversations and games, learn about other people’s experiences of staying active and connected, and share your own thoughts and ideas.
 

Winter 2021 Circles run for 10 weeks:
February 8 - April 18

Participant registration is open: 
February 1 - February 12

 

Rules:

1. You must be formally affiliated with the University of Michigan to join a Conversation Circle. You will need a uniqname (example: uniqname@umich.edu) to register for a circle.
2. You may only sign up for one Conversation Circle.
3. You must commit to attending all Conversation Circle meetings. Participants who miss more than two meetings or who miss a meeting without notifying their facilitator may be dropped from their Conversation Circle.

Choose from many Conversation Circles that meet every week day, including weekends. Please note that all listed meeting times are for the US Eastern Time Zone (ET). Each Circle has a maximum of five members.

Internship: University of Michigan Center for Japanese Studies (CJS)

This Thursday (11/12) at 6:00pm, the Center for Japanese Studies will be partnering with fellow International Institute centers to present “Access Internships”, an information session for U-M students to learn about available internship opportunities and funding resources that utilize their area studies - including virtual opportunities. 

Included in this session is an introduction to the Japan Internship Initiative, which pairs grad and undergrad students with summer positions that utilize their Japanese language and cultural skills. Funding opportunities for internships with Japanese organizations will also be presented.

Announcement: Summer abroad with Learning Enterprises

Learning Enterprises is looking for volunteers to teach English abroad in one of 11 countries this summer. Through LE, students can build meaningful connections in cities and developing towns in Asia, Eastern Europe, and more. LE is an international 501(c) non-profit organization, dedicated to expanding global horizons through international service teaching. With no program fees, LE has sent hundreds of college students to communities around the world every summer since 1992, and is looking to expand its presence both within the United States, and internationally. We have chapters in campuses across the United States, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and France, and are excited to bring our organization to students in the Ann Arbor area.


We are looking for students who are passionate about education, global service, and cross-cultural exchange.
