Call for Papers

Submit a Proposal

Dear Colleague,

We are pleased to share with you the Call for Papers for the Eighteenth International Conference on the Arts in Society, to be hosted by Jagiellonian University, Kraków, Poland, 5-7 July 2023.

The Arts in Society Research Network offers an interdisciplinary forum for discussion of the role of the arts in society. It is a place for critical engagement, examination and experimentation, developing ideas that connect the arts to their contexts in the world – on stage, in studios and theaters, in classrooms, in museums and galleries, on the streets and in communities. We seek to build an epistemic community where we can make linkages across disciplinary, geographic, and cultural boundaries.

Sign up for our newsletter, like us on Facebook, and on LinkedIn, or join the CGScholar Community to keep up to date.

Course: Security and Society Summer School 2022 - Online from Warsaw

Deadline: May 15, 2022

The 8th Security and Society Summer School, hosted by Collegium Civitas in Warsaw, Poland, has moved online due to the refugee crisis resulting from the Russia-Ukraine war. Nonetheless, the topics of this summer school are even more relevant today. This online course presents two of the most popular features of the Security and Society Summer School - the two-week intensive course on Central Europe & Security Issues with an optional four-week research internship with the Terrorism Research Center. The efforts of this research internship result in publication.

This course offers a broad overview of the modern security challenges faced by the countries of Central Europe and more broadly by NATO and the European Union. This year we will focus on the regional and global implications of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, along with the broad topics of war, international law relating to war, and peacebuilding. Other topics include hybrid threats, cybersecurity, and terrorism. In the era of globalization and interconnectivity emerging security threats affect the whole world. Thus, much of this course will taught toward understanding how these issues are also affecting other geopolitical hotspots around the world.

View the syllabus for this course here. In addition to academic credit, this program is very much a resume-building experience.

Program dates: June 20 - July 29, 2022
Application deadline: May 15, 2022
Cost: $750 (coursre only) / $1270 (course + internship)
Credits: 6 ECTS (3 US semester)

CFA: How to Approach Biographical Research? Workshop (Warsaw, Poland)

Deadline to Apply: July 31, 2019

Workshop on Biographical Studies for Young Scholars. The days when historical biographies had been reserved for life pictures of “great men” and – to a lesser degree – “great women” have long passed. Since then, many outstanding studies have demonstrated the enormous potential of either individual or group biographies, or biographical approach for historical research.
30 November (Saturday), applications until: 31 July, free admission
Biographical approach can provide insight into the way people thought and felt in the past, make us aware of the complexity of political and personal decisions and also of the scope for action of individuals in historical situations. It has a special place in the Jewish studies, since it allows to research and analyse complex identity choices. Similar processes also affect other ethnic and/or religious. However, it is also useful to scholars dealing with migration studies, social history and history of ideas.
In order to assist young scholars with biographical research projects and to provide them with a friendly space to discuss research questions and problems, the POLIN Museum invites early career scholars and especially PhD students to participate in a one-day workshop on 30 November 2019 in Warsaw. The workshop precedes the conference “Biographies and Politics. The Involvement of Jews and People of Jewish Origin in Leftist Movements in 19th and 20th Century Poland” (1-2 December 2019), jointly organized by the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, the Aleksander Brückner Center for Polish Studies, the Center for Hebrew and Jewish Studies, University of Oxford and the UCL. The participants of the workshop are expected to also attend the conference.
Interested early career scholars and PhD students are invited to submit the completed application form to: geopconference@polin.pl. The working language of the workshop will be English. Additional reading skills in Polish, Yiddish or German will be a plus. Participation in the workshop is free of charge. The POLIN Museum will cover the costs of accommodation and meals during the Workshop and the subsequent conference. Participants without institutional funding may apply for a travel grant.
