Call for Papers

Dear Colleague,

We are pleased to share with you the Call for Papers for the Thirteenth International Conference on Religion & Spirituality in Society, to be hosted by the School of Theology, Laboratory of Pedagogy and Religious Education, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Athens, Greece, 20-22 June 2023.

The Religion in Society Research Network explores the relationship between religion in society and the changing nature of spirituality. We seek to build an epistemic community where we can make linkages across disciplinary, geographic, and cultural boundaries.

Program

The International Conference on Religion & Spirituality in Society attracts participants from all over the world. Our Program Development team draws on this diversity to craft a rich and distinctive blended conference experience, with session types and programming explicitly designed to make the most of both online and place-based social knowledge processes.

Special Focus

Religion in the Public Sphere: From the Ancient Years to the Post-Modern Era

In addition to the annual special focus, we invite proposals addressing one of the following themes.

Plenary Speakers

Gert Biesta

Professor of Educational Theory and Pedagogy, Moray House School of Education and Sport, University of Edinburgh, UK

James Walters

Founding Director, Faith Centre and the Religion and Global Society Research Unit, London School of Economics and Political Science, UK

Aristotle Papanikolaou

Professor of Theology, Archbishop Demetrios Chair in Orthodox Theology and Culture, Co-founding Director, Orthodox Christian Studies Center, New York, USA

In-Person + Online

You can present and/or attend as an In-Person or Online Only delegate. Our blended model seeks to transcend physical boundaries by offering a platform to extend in-person conference content online while ensuring online-only delegates are afforded participatory and experiential spaces within the platform. At the same time, the model offers participants a legacy resource to which they can return in the CGScholar Event microsite, with access to a social space in our Community application where fellow participants can keep connected long after the conference ends.

With this step-by-step guide, you can get an insight into the new phases pre/during/post-conference of the blended conference experience.

Social Events

Pre-Conference Tour of the Acropolis Museum

Join the other delegates and plenary speakers on a walking tour of the Acropolis Museum. What visitors enjoy most in this museum is the feeling that you are back in time strolling around the ancient city.

Case Study Evening

In-Person conference delegates are invited to join us for a conference case study day to see the city and discuss the conference themes. Walking through the "neighborhood of the gods" (Plaka) and the oldest street in Europe (Tripodon Street), we start one of the most exciting promenades in the world (the classical Peripatos' walkway'). We end up at the Roman Agora, Hadrian's Library and the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Annunciation.

Conference Dinner @ Attikos House

Join other delegates and plenary speakers for a dinner hosted at the Attikos House. Visit Attikos House and enjoy your dinner with great food and good company in a cozy environment. Relax and try special Greek cuisine with an amazing view.
