Job: ELI Student Employment Opportunity

Deadline: December 5, 2016 

The English Language Institute is seeking U-M undergraduates to serve as Undergraduate Consultants in ELI 994, our winter training program for international GSIs in LSA, a collaboration with CRLT.  Undergraduate Consultants provide feedback to GSIs in practice teaching sessions and offer valuable insights into the U-M undergraduate experience. 

These paid positions are open to students with and without work-study and offer participants a fun, interactive intercultural experience. Participants also have an opportunity to support GSIs and undergraduate education and to contribute to a more positive campus climate.

Job DescriptionThe English Language Institute is recruiting undergraduate students for paid consulting positions in a Winter 2017 GSI teacher preparation course. As consultants, students participate in mock office hours held by a prospective GSI and in practice teaching sessions as they would in a regular class. They then give feedback on the quality of the instruction in terms of language use and lesson delivery. An orientation session focused on providing appropriate feedback is given prior to the start of the course.
Educational ValueStudents in this position will learn about second language teaching and learning, critical analysis, and constructive feedback skills. They will also have the opportunity to learn about quality teaching by observing and giving feedback on practice lessons.
Job RequirementsQualifications
    ►Enrollment as an undergraduate in the Winter 2017 semester
    ►Experience in LSA undergraduate courses
    ►An interest in quality teaching
    ►Excellent time management skills
    ►Ability to offer clear, concise feedback in both written and oral form
    ►Availability on the following dates and times

    Preference will be given to applicants with prior successful performance in the GSI preparation course or other ELI courses or programs, to applicants with international experience and to applicants who have taken a range of LSA courses in the sciences and humanities.
